With Sights Set on FedEx Cup Playoffs, Ricky Fowler Leads 2021 3M Open After Round 1
With the four majors complete, many of the PGA golfers are turning their attention to the FedEx Cup and qualifying for the playoffs, which begin after three more tournaments.
In addition to that pressure, this tournament at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota is the final tune-up before Olympic play in Japan for many of the golfers in this weekend’s field.
For Ricky Fowler, he’s right on the FedEx Cup playoff bubble after making the field in all 11 seasons the tournament has taken place, so his 7-under 64 in the first round to lead the field at the 3M Open helps his cause greatly. Fowler hasn’t posted a victory on the PGA Tour in two years.
Jhonatton Vegas, who will be representing Venezuela in the Olympics next week, and hometown golfer Troy Merritt each posted a 64 to join Fowler atop the leaderboard.
Two tournament favorites who posted solid weekends at the Open Championship last weekend also had good first rounds. Louis Oosthuizen, who led the Open for three straight days and set a tournament record for a lowest score after 36 holes, shot at 68, while Dustin Johnson posted a 70 on Thursday.
Elsewhere on the leaderboard, Adam Schenk continued his solid play following a fourth-place finish at the John Deere Classic two weeks ago by posting a 65, which was his 10th-straight round of 70 or better.
On the flip side, Scott Stalling was 8-under through 17 but got caught up in a weather delay and ended up double-bogeying 18 after a 2-hour, 24-minute break to also finish with a 65. Defending tournament champion Michael Thompson also posted a 1-over 72.
Here are the updated odds from JazzSports for the remainder of the tournament.
