For the first time in three years, the 2022 Shoprite LPGA Classic returns to its traditional late-spring date after being contested in October for the past two years.
Jin Young Ko and Inbee Park led going into the final round of the 2021 event at the Seaview Marriott Resort in Galloway, New Jersey, but Celine Boutier of France roared back from five strokes down to a shoot a 63 and win the event by a stroke over Ko, Park, and Brooke Henderson.
The Bay Course at Seaview is a par 71 and is 6,190 yards in length for this event. It was designed in 1914 and Sam Snead won the PGA Championship here in 1942. As is the case at many pro golf courses, the 18th hole features plenty of risk and reward. An accurate tee shot will tempt many to go for the green in two, especially if they need to make up a stroke at the end of their round.
Annika Sorenstam and Anna Nordqvist hold the tournament record with a 17-under 196 over 54 holes.
Jin Young Ko Favored Getting the Job Done.
The contenders here all came off four rounds at Pine Needles for the U.S. Women’s Open. Winner Minjee Lee is taking the week off with her record $1.8 million purse, but Jin Young Ko (+450) and Lydia Ko (+650) are the betting favorites here after finishing fourth and fifth at the U.S. Open, respectively.
Jin Young Ko finished tied for second here last year while Lydia Ko didn’t play in this event in 2021.
Hye-Jin Choi doesn’t have a win on the year but has been knocking on the door while putting up some impressive stats. Her Strokes Gained: A total of 2.210 is better than Jin Young Ko’s 2.280 for the year, and Choi has posted top-10 finishes in five of her last six events, including thirds at the U.S. Women’s Open and the LOTTE Championship.
Brooke Henderson (+1800) has hit the ball well but has struggled in the putting game. She struggled in April but came back to finish 15th last week and was tied for runner-up here a year ago. Inbee Park (+1400) is fresh after not playing in the U.S. Open last week and was also runner-up here in 2021.
Defending champion Celine Boutier tees off at +1800. She was tied for fourth at the Chevron Championship, the year’s first major, but hasn’t finished in the top 30 in her last three events. Perhaps a return to the site of her most-recent win will turn things around.
Jin Young Ko is more than due for a win and is returning to a course where she left something on the table last year. But we like the other two runners-up from this event a bit more in Henderson and Park, as both have better value. Choi at +1100 is also a great play.
