2023 LIV Golf Jeddah: Captain Koepka repeats

When Talor Gooch reached a playoff with Brooks Koepka at LIV Golf Jeddah on Sunday after each shot a -14 after 54 holes, it assured that Gooch would be a winner regardless of the result. Here the 2023 LIV Golf Jeddah Recap

Due to season-long points leader Cameron Smith finishing in 25th, Gooch had enough points by winning or finishing runner-up to pass Smith in the standings and win the 2023 championship, assuring him an $18 million bonus as a result.

On the course, Koepka won on the second playoff hole, giving him back-to-back wins at LIV Golf Jeddah and was his third worldwide win this year.

The win not only gave Koepka a $4 million prize, but he surpassed Bryson DeChambeau for third in the overall standings, giving the 2023 PGA Championship winner another $4 million bonus.

“I really didn’t think I had a chance,” Koepka said. “I don’t know how many points Bryson had to have or to get, but I felt like I had to win, and I did my part. … Super fortunate to kind of squeak in there.”

Despite the playoff loss, Gooch won a season-high three times on this tour, and today’s runner-up result secured him the championship.

“It’s awesome. It was a day that you dream of – for the score and the moment. It was a special, special day,” Gooch said. “From January 1st until now, that’s what we’ve been working for. So to get here and be the champion, man, I’m proud. I’m honored. And I’m excited.”

The second individual season in LIV history ends with Gooch holding the record for wins in a season with three. He shares the record for LIV wins overall with Koepka and Smith, who each won twice this year and once in 2022.

There was a tie for third among Sergio Garcia, Harold Varner III, and Scott Vincent. Garcia’s Fireballs, however, did earn the victory in the team portion of the competition. He and teammates Abraham Ancer, Carlos Ortiz, and Eugenio Chacarra each earn a $750,000 bonus for the team triumph.

It was also a happy day for Vincent, as his top-five finish was enough to move him into 22nd in the points standings. The top 24 are assured a spot with their current team for the 2024 season.

Tied for sixth were Dustin Johnson, Mito Pereira, and Charles Howell III. Cameron Tringale and Joaquin Niemann tied for ninth at -10.

Those who face the potential of being dropped by their team after finishing outside the top-24 in points include Ancer, Matthew Wolff, Pat Perez, Paul Casey, Charl Schwartzel, and Graeme McDowell.
