We haven’t quite reached the halfway stage of this year’s Phoenix Open with a whole host of players still needing to complete their second rounds today. But despite the delays, this year’s tournament looks wonderfully poised with several of the world’s best golfers finding themselves in serious contention. Here our 2023 Phoenix Open Round 1 & 2 Highlights
Leading the way and already back in the clubhouse is last year’s champion Scottie Scheffler.
After a quiet first round where the world number two shot a solid but unspectacular 68, he burst into life yesterday, blitzing the course with seven birdies to lead on -10.
Last year’s Phoenix Open provided Scheffler with his first PGA Tour victory and it would go onto spark a run of form which would see the American claim the top spot in the world rankings and see him win the Masters. He will be hoping this year can provide the same recipe for success.
Two players will start two shots behind Scheffler with Jon Rahm and Adam Hadwin sitting on -8.
Rahm, who is looking for his third win of the year is another who finds himself back in the clubhouse and he will head into today’s third round full of momentum, following a superb second round 66.
Hadwin will have a busy day ahead of him. The Canadian still has eight holes of his second round to play and he will be hoping he could end his round at the top of the leaderboard.
In what is a loaded field, current world number one Rory McIlroy is another who still has a few holes to finish in his second round. He currently sits seven off the lead but has responded well after shooting a disappointing 73 in his first round. He will certainly believe this is a tournament that he can still win.
The Phoenix Open is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the PGA Tour. The sixteenth hole provides one of the best amphitheatres in all of sport with thousands of fans all waiting to see if someone will find the bottom of the cup.
With such a deep and loaded field, those who make the cut will still believe that they have a great chance of victory this weekend.
It’s been a frustrating stretch of tournaments for Scottie Scheffler who has been knocking on the door of regaining the world number one ranking spot but hasn’t quite been able to get the job done.
He has set himself up with a great chance this weekend and will be confident he can win this tournament for the second year in succession. The favorite for the tournament, odds of +185 still represents some good value.
Hot on the heels of Scheffler is world number three Jon Rahm. Rahm has been the form golfer of the year and is hoping he can capture a third title of 2023 here. A birdie machine, odds of +350 could be the value play of the day.
Xander Schaufelle rounds out the top three in the betting. The Californian still has six holes to play in his second round and will resume just four shots off Scheffler’s lead. Schaufelle has a fine record in this event having finished third and second in the last two years. More than capable of winning this event, odds of +600 represents some fantastic value.
With the tournament wide open there are many terrific players that can be backed at huge prices. Tom Kim will start the day five off the lead but has already shown he knows what it takes to win at this level. Odds of +3000 look huge for a player of his class.
Rory McIlroy is used to overcoming slow starts and won’t be deterred that he currently sits seven shots off the pace. Whilst he has work to do, his current odds of +2200 look to be on the large side considering he has won from this far back before.
