With the Masters slowly looming on the horizon, this 2023 Valspar Championship offers those already qualified the opportunity to play themselves into form, whereas those who haven’t yet punched their Augusta ticket have a golden chance here with the winner earning a spot in the tournament.
At the halfway stage Adam Schenk leads the field by one stroke. However twenty five players will star today’s third round within five strokes of the lead, setting up an incredibly exciting weekend of golf.
Schenk builds on Round 1 lead, notable names gathering behind
Ranked at 143 in the world, Adam Schenk is one of those players who will be looking to win this weekend and book his ticket to this year’s Masters.
Building on a positive first round, where he was one of three first round leaders, Schenk backed up his first eighteen holes with a solid two under second round display to lead narrowly by one.
Hot on the heels of Schenk is Kramer Hickok. Another who has always been close to the lead, the American has recorded two rounds of 68 to start in todays final group.
In recent weeks Tommy Fleetwood has shown signs that he is finding the form to take him back towards the top end of the golf world rankings. A former Open runner up, Fleetwood is in a good position to back up his solid display at last week’s Players Championship and will start today two off the lead.
Another man who will start two strokes back is Jordan Spieth. In recent weeks Spieth has found himself in contention at the halfway stage but has had poor weekends to drop tamely away. With his game still blighted by inconsistencies, Spieth will be hoping to discover some of his best golf in order to win his first title of the year.
Justin Thomas entered the week as the highest ranked player in the field and the world number ten finds himself four strokes off the pace. Thomas has shown numerous times in the past that he can win when coming from off the pace and he will be hopeful of doing so once again this weekend.
Current favorite for victory in the Valspar is Jordan Spieth. The Texan will be looking to win for the first time since his success in last year’s RSM. Spieth obviously knows what it takes to win the game’s biggest prizes having won three majors, but in recent seasons his game has become plagued by inconsistent golf. He will need to play solidly to contend this weekend.
Tommy Fleetwood comes next in the betting and the Englishman will be wanting to build on some recent positive performances.
Fleetwood was right in the mix at last week’s Players Championship before some poor holes in his final round ruined his chances of victory. He will be looking to win for the very first time in America and he has put himself in a brilliant position to accomplish that feat here.
Adam Schenk rounds out the top three in the betting and despite his lead, backing him does contain a slight leap of faith. Schenk has never won on Tour with his best effort coming when he placed third back in the 2021 Shriners Open.
The American has had a solid start to 2023 but has rarely troubled the tops of the leaderboards. He will be hoping that changes this weekend.
Lurking down the field and the value plays of today look to be Justin Thomas and JT Poston.
Thomas is the classiest player in this field but as of yet is yet to get his putter hot. If Thomas can play like we know he can odds of +900 could look hugely overpriced.
Poston will start today one stroke ahead of Thomas but is three times the price of his compatriot. A model of consistency, Poston knows what it takes to contend and odds of +2800 could end up being a steal.
