Steve Stricker Favored to Win as Host of American Family Insurance Championship

Steve Stricker, the overwhelming leader in the Charles Schwab Cup Money standings on the PGA Tour Champions, hosts the American Family Insurance Championship.

Stricker, who climbed up to second in the Official World Golf Ranking in 2009 and has 12 PGA Tour and 14 PGA Tour Champions wins in his career, lives in Madison and is from Edgerton. While he hasn’t won this event that dates back to 2016, he did have success in his home state in 2021 as captain of the victorious U.S. team in the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.

Jerry Kelly, who is also from Madison, is a two-time winner of this event (2019, ’21) and was runner-up in 2018. Fred Couples has also won this event, and the defending champion is Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee, the only non-American-born player to win this tournament.

The Course

University Ridge Golf Course in Madison has hosted this event since its inception, but it will be moving across town to TPC Wisconsin in 2025. University Ridge is a Robert Trent Jones Jr. course that opened in 1991. It’s par 72 and measures 7,259 yards. The front nine, which is more open, has three par 3s and par 5s. The back nine has more trees to contend with.

Kirk Triplett owns the tournament record, shooting a 17-under 199 in the inaugural event in 2016.

Stricker Heavily Favored in Hometown Event

Steve Stricker (+250)

Has won three times in nine tries this year, but as we mentioned, he hasn’t been able to get it done in his event. What he has done, however, has been remarkably consistent—and good. He’s on a streak of 52 straight rounds at par or better. That’s the current record on the PGA Tour Champions and is tied with Tiger Woods’ run in 2000-01 for most consecutive rounds without going over par on a PGA Tour-sanctioned tour.

In this tournament, while he has zero wins, he does have three podium finishes in five tries with a finish no worse than 11th.

Other American Family Insurance Championship Contenders

Jerry Kelly (+750)

Was runner-up in Iowa last week and has finished in the top 15 in four of his last five tournaments. His record here is impeccable. After finishing 13th in his first try in 2017, his finishes in the next four events: 1, 1, 2, 3. In 15 total rounds at University Ridge, his worst round is a 2-under 70.

Steven Ames (+1200)

Is coming off a win last week in Iowa, which was his third of the season. In his last five events, he’s been even better: two wins, another top 10, and two other top 15s.

Miguel Angel Jimenez (+1200)

Was tied for third here last year with Kelly. In 10 starts this year, he has been unable to break through for a win, but he is fifth on the season-long money list thanks to a remarkable run of top-10 finishes: seven in a row and nine in 10 starts in 2023.

Is it finally Stricker’s time? With such low odds, we’d rather back Kelly, the other hometown favorite, at +750. We’ll also go with Jimenez, who is due for a win after three victories in 2022, and former tournament winner Fred Couples at +1800.
