Vincent Norrman Earns First PGA Tour Win in Playoff at Barbasol Championship

Vincent Norrman, of Sweden, defeated Nathan Kimsey in the first playoff hole of the Barbasol Championship 2023 to record his first-ever PGA Tour victory on Sunday.

The win in the companion event to the Scottish Open paid 300 instead of 500 FedEx Cup points and doesn’t include a berth in the Masters, but the win by the rookie gives him a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour along with a spot in next week’s Open Championship and next year’s PGA Championship.

“I don’t think I can process this for a while. I’m at a loss for words,” Norrman said after parring the first playoff hole for the victory.

Norrman shot a 66 at Keene Trace in Kentucky in the final round but after a bogey on 18, he dropped into the playoff with Kimsey, a 30-year-old on the DP World Tour from England playing in his first PGA Tour event. The Barbasol, along with the Scottish Open, were joint events by the PGA and DP World Tours.

“Gave it a great run today; played some fantastic golf!” Kimsey wrote on Twitter. “Came up short but to be that close to grabbing a win in my first PGA Tour event, I can’t complain!”

Norrman was playing in his 23rd PGA Tour event after making his debut last September. His best prior finish was eighth at the AT&T Byron Nelson.

During the playoff, Norrman missed the green on his second shot on the par-4 18th, but his third shot landed to within 2 feet of the cup. Kimsey’s tee shot went into thick rough, and his second shot landed in a greenside bunker. He failed to get up and down, and Norrman tapped in for the win.

“I didn’t look at the leaderboard today. I was just trying to post a number, which I had in my head,” explained Norrman. “I don’t think I’ve dreamt this big, honestly. It’s amazing.”

Trevor Cone was close to joining the playoff as well but carded a double bogey on the par-3 16th hole and out of the lead. He finished tied for third with Adrien Saddier.

Lucas Glover, who led after rounds one and two here, would up fifth at -20. It’s the third consecutive top-10 finish for the veteran. Pre-tournament betting favorite Taylor Pendrith was sixth at -19. Daniel Brown and Grayson Murray were tied for seventh, and there was a five-way tie for ninth among Akshay Bhatia, Masahiro Kawamura, Doc Redman, David, Ravetto, and Alexander Levy.

Up Next

It’s another joint weekend for the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. The top stars from each are at Royal Liverpool in England for the 151st Open Championship, which is the year’s fourth and final major. Many of the players who competed in the Barbasol Championship are heading to Lake Tahoe for the Barracuda Championship. The event will be contested under the Modified Stableford scoring rules, which sees players earn points for birdies and eagles and lose points for bogeys. Chez Reavie is the defending champion.
