BMW PGA Championship Field & Preview

Among those looking to take home the winner’s share of the event-record $9 million purse will be all 12 members of the European Ryder Cup team. The team, which includes Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland, arrives in England after practicing at Marco Simone—the site of this year’s Ryder Cup—earlier in the week.

The event dates back to 1955 and has been held at Wentworth annually since 1972. It was originally known as the British PGA Championship. The PGA stands for Professional Golfers Association and represents club professionals from around the world—it should not be confused with the PGA Tour, which is a separate entity.

This is the fourth of five Rolex Series events on the DP World Tour, which are higher-paying and offer more Official World Golf Rankings points than typical tournaments. Nick Faldo owns the record with four wins in this event while Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, and Peter Aliss each have three wins. Montgomerie’s all came in a row from 1998-2000, making him the only golfer to win three in a row here. Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald (2011-12) is the only other back-to-back champ.

The defending champion is Shane Lowry, who won a three-round event a year ago after the final round was canceled following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Course

Wentworth is not a links course because it is not along the sea, but it does feature typical challenges like wind, strategically placed bunkers, and thick rough. The differences are that the fairways are a bit tight, and there are plenty of trees to contend with. It’s a par-72, 7,267-yard course that has a great finishing hole: the par-5 18th was redesigned to be more of a challenge and features a large stream that protects the length of the green.

Byeong-hun An holds the tournament record to par at -21. His 267 in 2015 was one shy of the aggregate record of 266, set by Brian Bamford in 1961 when the course played at a par of 70.

McIlroy Slightly Favored Despite Wet Final Round at Irish Open

Rory McIlroy (+650) finds himself the narrow favorite here at Wentworth. The Northern Irishman was leading the Irish Open going into Sunday’s final round, but he dunked four balls into the drink and wound up in 16th place. The result snapped a streak of 10 straight top-10s worldwide, but he returns to a friendly course in Wentworth. McIlroy won here in 2014 and nearly forced a playoff a year ago, but his putt for eagle on 18 rested on the lip of the cup.

Viktor Hovland (+700) is on a two-tournament winning streak, having won the BMW Championship and PGA Tour Championship in his last two events. In addition to being in top form, Hovland finished fifth here last year and was the leader after 18 holes following a first-round 64.

Jon Rahm (+750) hasn’t looked like himself as of late, but perhaps a break of a few weeks since competing in the FedEx Cup playoffs provided a bit of a reset. It was this event last year that started his hot streak that lasted all the way through The Masters in April. Rahm shot a 62 in the final round to finish one shot shy of Lowry, and he was also runner-up in this event in 2019.

Other Contenders

Tommy Fleetwood (+1600) has been on a roll since March—and even prior to that if you count his win in November in South Africa on the DP World Tour. But since the PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship, Fleetwood has eight top-10 finishes in his last 14 starts, including a playoff appearance at the RBC Canadian Open, a fifth-place finish at the U.S. Open, and a sixth at the PGA Tour Championship a few weeks ago.

Matt Fitzpatrick (+1700) had a strong performance two weeks ago at the Omega European Masters, finishing third. Prior to that, he was ninth at the PGA Tour Championship and runner-up to Hovland at the BMW Championship. He’s currently playing the best golf of the year and would love to win his home country’s biggest event.

Defending champion Shane Lowry sits at +2000 on the heels of his best performance since winning here last year: a third at the Irish Open. Lowry responded well to criticism for being included in the Ryder Cup team with a strong run in his home country, so can he keep up the momentum here?

Ludvig Aberg (+2200) leads a contingent of a whopping 11 first-time winners on the DP World Tour who gained inclusion into this event. When we last saw the Swede, he rattled off four birdies in the final five holes of the Omega European Masters to win his first event after turning pro in June. The win also impressed Donald enough to include him on the Ryder Cup team.

Fellow Swede Vincent Norrman (+3500) has one-upped Aberg by winning twice in just 14 DP World Tour starts. In July, he won the Barbasol Championship, a joint PGA Tour and DP World Tour tournament, and Norrman followed that up with a win in the Irish Open a week ago.

Thomas Detry (+4500) was one shot off the lead going into the final round at Wentworth last year and wound up fifth. It’s one of nine top-three finishes on the DP World Tour for the Belgian, and he quietly had a solid first season on the PGA Tour, reaching the FedEx Cup playoffs. He has a deep field to contend with, but this is one to watch.

2023 BMW PGA Championship Odds

The question remains whether the heavy favorites will be going all out to win or just to fine-tune their game for the Ryder Cup. Because of that, we’re going to look at those with some added value: Fleetwood, Fitzpatrick, and Aberg are our best bets along with Detry as a longshot.
