Fortinet Championship Odds, Field & Betting Picks

When the PGA Tour switched up its schedule, the Fortinet Championship is no longer starting the new season. That will happen in Hawaii in January, but this week’s event in Napa, California, tees off the seven-event PGA Tour Fall series. Check here the 2023 Fortinet Championship odds.

The series will help determine who gets their player cards for 2024 as well as who will qualify for the first two Signature Events of next season (last season’s top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings are already in). In addition, winners of these events will gain entry into all of 2024’s big events, including the majors and The Players Championship.

PGA Tour Odds

The tournament bounced around Arizona and California since its inception as the Frys.com Open in 2007 and has settled into Silverado Country Club since 2015.

Max Homa became the second two-time winner of this event last year when he defended his 2021 championship. Now, he looks to become the first golfer since Steve Stricker at the 2009-11 John Deere Classics to win a tournament three years in a row.

In addition, Homa is also one of two U.S. Ryder Cup team members participating in this event before they will be playing in Italy in two weeks. The other is Justin Thomas.

The Course

The North Course at Silverado opened in 1967 and was redesigned by Johnny Miller in 2010 after the Hall of Famer acquired the course. It’s a par 72 and measures 7,123 yards. The end of the course features plenty of birdie opportunities for golfers to be aggressive if they need to. Some of the holes were switched around, so the signature par-3 hole is now the 17th, which leads into the 575-yard, par-5 18th that’s now the finishing hole.

Stewart Cink set the course record with a 21-under 267 in 2020. Homa’s winning scores in he past two years have been -19 and -16, respectively.

California Homa Returns Home

We typically see two versions of Max Homa (+750) on the PGA Tour: California Homa and Homa everywhere else. Both of his wins last season and four of his six career victories have taken place in the Golden State, Homa’s home state. In addition to both wins here, he won the 2021 Genesis Invitational at Riviera and the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. He also finished runner-up to Jon Rahm at this year’s Genesis Invitational.

Despite not winning in the playoffs, Homa finished his 2022-23 season with four straight top 10s. He was fifth at the BMW Championship and placed ninth at the PGA Tour Championship.

Homa’s nearest challenger in the odds is Justin Thomas (+1200). Thomas is hoping that his six-week break after missing the FedEx Cup playoffs for the first time in his career serves as a reset. He’ll be looking to gain confidence this week before taking his turn at the Ryder Cup. He’s likely overvalued here due to his name and reputation, but he’ll be looking to show off the improvements he made in his game on the course this week.

Other Contenders

Sahith Theegala (+1850) didn’t fulfill the predictions of many who thought he would break through with his first win in the 2022-23 season. He finished sixth here last year and was in 2021 at -8 through 54 holes, but a 75 on Sunday sent him down the leaderboard. Theegala also logged top 15s in both playoff events but missed out on the Tour Championship by one spot in the standings.

Cameron Davis (+2100) missed the Tour Championship but did cement his status for 2024 by finishing in seventh at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and sixth at the BMW Championship to move into 48th in the final standings. It’s been over two years since Davis last visited the winner’s circle, but his strong finishes in elite fields (he was also fourth at the PGA Championship and sixth at The Players Championship) means that another win might be close by.

Along with Theegala, there are two other potential first-time winners to look for: Stephan Jaeger (+2600) and Eric Cole (+2850). Jaeger finished last season with 13 straight cuts made, and more than half of those starts ended with a top-25 finish. He only had two top-10 results, but with such consistent play, a jump in the leaderboard typically isn’t far behind.

Cole, the front-runner for the 2023 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year, is the only first-year player to have reached the BMW Championship. Comfortable in the fact that he’s qualified for all the big events next year, expect him to go for a win in the fall series. Cole burst on the scene by losing in a playoff at The Honda Classic last February, which got him into some other big events. He was a respectable 15th at The PGA Championship and finished his 2022-23 season with a 25th at the BMW Championship.

Longshots

Swedish players have been on quite a run, but Alex Noren (+3850) is worth a look on his own merit. Swedes have won the past two events on the DP World Tour, and Noren finished the 2022-23 PGA Tour schedule with top 25s in three of his last five events. He’ll be looking to build on a 36th-place finish in his debut in Napa last year.

Kevin Streelman (+4350), like Thomas, missed the playoffs for the first time in his career. But he came in second at the 3M Open, which was the penultimate event of last year’s regular season, and he’s had success at Silverado as well, finishing third here in 2020.

2023 Fortinet Championship Odds

It’s impossible to avoid Homa, even at short odds. We’re expecting Thomas to work more on his overall game to get him ready for Italy, but we do love the way Theegala and Davis have been playing. We’ll also back Cole and Streelman in the first event of the PGA Tour Fall.
