Hero World Challenge Odds, Pick & Field

In a tournament that’s gathered plenty of attention due to the return of Tiger Woods to competitive golf, reigning FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland will be looking to make history at the all-star-style event in the Bahamas. Get the 2023 Hero World Challenge Odds here!

PGA Tour Odds

Hovland has a chance to become the first golfer to three-peat at the Hero World Challenge, and the Norwegian has also won the last two PGA Tour events he has participated in. This one, however, is an unofficial event just for prize money and no points.

The event is hosted by Woods to benefit his Tiger Woods Foundation. Since it was created in 2000, Woods has won a record five times. He’s playing this week for the first time since having surgery on his ankle following a withdrawal out of the Masters in April. A win by Hovland would make him the only other golfer to have more than two wins in this event. Davis Love III and Graeme McDowell are the other two-time winners, and neither are in the field.

The Course

Albany Golf Course was designed by Ernie Els and is a links-style layout despite being on an island in the Bahamas. It’s a par-72, 7,309-yard course. The course record is held by Bubba Watson, who shot a 25-under 263 in 2014, which was the first year the tournament was held at this venue. Hovland’s winning score of -16 in 2022 was the highest finishing score to win this tournament thanks to a persistent coastal wind. Windy conditions are also expected during the tournament this year.

Hovland Narrowly Favored Over Scheffler

With Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy not in the field, the remaining top two golfers in the Official World Golf Rankings are the favorites here. Viktor Hovland (+400) is a narrow favorite over Scottie Scheffler (+450). It goes without saying that Hovland has the advantage due to its current form and course history. His last two PGA Tour appearances were wins in the BMW Championship and PGA Tour Championship. After his victory at East Lake, he helped the European team win the Ryder Cup by going 3-1-1 and placed fifth and second in the two biggest events of the season on the DP World Tour.

Scheffler has made a habit of finishing behind Hovland recently. He was runner-up here both in 2021 and ’22, and he also was part of a three-way playoff at the BMW that Hovland prevailed in. The 2022 Masters and 2023 The Players Championship winner hasn’t competed since the Ryder Cup.

Other Contenders

Two golfers who have tasted victory recently are next at +800: Max Homa and Collin Morikawa. Homa won the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa a few weeks ago against a loaded field, and Morikawa snapped a two-plus-year victory drought with a win at the Zozo Championship in Japan in October.

Homa picking up his first international win will be a confidence booster, and despite not winning in the last several months on the PGA Tour, he is currently riding a streak of five straight top 10s worldwide.

Morikawa has finished fifth and sixth here in his last two tries. After a rough 2022 and start to ’23, he did show signs of life this summer, where he made a playoff at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and finished sixth in the PGA Tour Championship.

Justin Thomas (+1400) has an opportunity to continue his comeback story on a course that has been friendly to him in recent years. He’s the only golfer to partake in each of the last five Hero World Challenges, and he’s come in fifth in the last three. After missing the FedEx Cup playoffs for the first time in his career, Thomas wound up fifth in the Fortinet Championship and was fourth in the Nedbank on the DP World Tour a few weeks back.

Matt Fitzpatrick (+2000) comes in playing good golf but hasn’t had success at Albany. He was also in the playoff at the BMW Championship and won a links event on the DP World Tour. We’ll see if he can finally score well on this links-style course since he is in fine form.

The 2017 champion here, Rickie Fowler (+2000), earned a return trip for the first time since 2019 with his resurgence this past season. He owns the course record for a single round with a 61. Fowler’s win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic was his fourth top-five finish in a run of five starts, but his best finish in the six events since is a 16th

Longshots

If some longshots can get past Hovland and Scheffler, they have a good chance over some of the other more popular names in this field. First is Brian Harman (+3000), who dominated at The Open Championship. In his first competition since the Ryder Cup, he shot three rounds in the 60s at The RSM Classic a few weeks ago to get ready for his Albany debut.

Sepp Straka (+3000) is flying under the radar and looking to improve on his 10th-place finish from his debut here in 2022. Straka won the John Deere Classic over the summer and was runner-up at The Open Championship two weeks after that. He hasn’t played since being part of the winning European team at the Ryder Cup.

Let’s close with two wild cards: Will Zalatoris (+3000) and Tiger Woods (+5000). Zalatoris was coming off his first win in August 2022 after several runner-up finishes in majors when he suffered a back injury that has kept him out of action until now. Woods has the longest odds in the field, but he said earlier this week that he wouldn’t be playing if he didn’t think he could win. We aren’t backing either one, but they are interesting stories to follow.

2023 Hero World Challenge Odds

Scheffler could use a high-profile win, but we have to back Hovland over the Texan. We are also high on the way Morikawa has been playing, and a win by Thomas would cap his comeback story. Straka is our longshot pick.
