John Deere Round 3 Highlights

Todd overturns two stroke deficit to lead John Deere field by one

It was a day of change during yesterday’s third round of the John Deere Classic.

Starting the day with a two stroke lead, Cameron Young was hoping to cement his class and put himself in prime position to finally land his first PGA title.

Instead, it would turn out to be a frustrating day for the reigning Rookie of the Year who couldn’t take advantage of several birdie opportunities and made many uncharacteristic mistakes. Heading up the final hole trailing by one, Young’s miserable day was compounded by a costly double bogey that will see him start today three strokes back.

Brendon Todd was one the main beneficiaries of Young’s wastefulness and the Tour veteran was able to overcome the two shot deficit he faced at the start of the day, to end it leading by one.

Producing his second 66 of the week, Todd got his round off to the perfect start with a brilliant eagle on the par 5 second. Keen to ensure he didn’t let the momentum slide, he wouldn’t go on to drop a shot for the entirety of his round and will tee off today looking for the 4th win of his career.

Starting one shot behind are the trio of Denny McCarthy, Adam Schenk and Alex Smalley.

Smalley produced one of the best rounds of the year to fire himself up the leaderboard. His brilliant round of 62 included three birdies and an eagle on his front nine – with a further four birdies being picked up on the back nine.

2023 John Deere Round 4 Preview

Starting as co-favorites heading into today’s final round are the American duo of Denny McCarthy and Brendon Todd.

Todd holds a slender one shot lead and has been in great form this week. Having just dropped one shot all week, he has given himself plenty of looks for birdie. With the putter working well, he will hope to record another low round today.

Denny McCarthy headed into the week as one of the highest ranked players on the field. Having lost in a playoff at the Memorial just a few weeks ago, McCarthy has a chance to flip the script today and land his first PGA title.

Adam Schenk is another man who is looking to become a PGA winner for the first time and he has come close this year finishing as a runner up at the Valspar Championship

Schenk has fond memories of this tournament having finished second last year. Another who has just dropped one shot all week, expect him to remain in contention today.

Cameron Young has posted some brilliant results in the early stages of his PGA career but hasn’t quite been able to string four decent rounds together. Despite surrendering the lead yesterday he still only remains three strokes back. A birdie machine on his day, he won’t be phased by the deficit he currently faces and he could be the value play of today.

JT Poston has posted better scores with each and every round and is another who starts today three strokes back. Poston has been a beast on the back nine scoring twelve birdies from the 27 holes he has played. If he finds himself near the leaders on the back nine his current odds could look hugely overpriced.
