LIV Golf Chicago Odds, Field & Betting Picks

With just two individual events remaining before LIV Golf crowns its champion for 2023, Cameron Smith is in excellent position. After his win in New Jersey in LIV’s most recent event in mid-August, the Australian leads the standings by a wide margin and is returning to a course where he was victorious a year ago. Here the 2023 LIV Golf Chicago Odds, Field & Betting Picks.

2023 LIV Golf Chicago Betting Preview

Smith leads the standings by 21 points over Talor Gooch. The next closest competitor is Patrick Reed with 120 points. If Smith can extend his lead over Gooch to more than 40 points, he will clinch the championship and the $18 million bonus that comes with it before the series’ final individual event in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, next month.

But there are plenty of incentives for the field to come out swinging this week—namely the $4 million bonus that goes to the winner, along with the team competition that is featured at all LIV events.

The Course

For the third time, the LIV series plays on a course where it competed at a year ago. Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois is the host of this week’s 54-hole tournament that’s taking place from Friday to Sunday. It’s home to the Northern Illinois University golf team and has hosted several top amateur competitions along with the 2009 Solheim Cup, which is women’s golf’s version of the Ryder Cup. It’s a par-72 course that plays rather long at 7,408 yards.

Cameron Smith Looks to Extend Points Lead as Defending Champ of LIV Golf Chicago

After a slow start (for him) that included just one top-five finish in the first five LIV events of 2023, Cameron Smith (+700) has been in prime form. The 2022 Open Championship winner has two wins and a runner-up finish in his last six starts. Of note, the other three starts in that span were finishes outside of the top 10, but returning to a course where he won last year, we don’t expect Smith to struggle this week, especially since a win would clinch the season championship as well (unless Gooch were to finish second).

Other Contenders

It’s easy to forget that it was just two events ago where Bryson DeChambeau (+1100) shot a 58 in the final round of a runaway victory at the 2023 LIV Golf Greenbrier. He followed that up with a pedestrian 18th place at Bedminster, but DeChambeau still has a win and a runner-up in his last four starts. In 2022, when DeChambeau wasn’t playing nearly as well as he is currently, the big hitter finished eighth in Chicago, so look for him to improve on that result.

Patrick Reed (+1400) sits in third place in the standings despite not having the benefit of a victory. In fact, the former Masters champion hasn’t yet won on the LIV circuit. But his consistency is among the best, scoring five top-five finishes in 11 events. Aside from a 37th at The Greenbrier, Reed has finishes of fifth, second, and fourth in his last four starts. After a rough start here last year, Reed rebounded to finish tied for 12th thanks to a 65 in the final round.

Dustin Johnson (+1400) tied for second here last year, but he just doesn’t seem to be in the same form that he was last year when he dominated the circuit and won the series championship. Johnson won in Tulsa this past spring but has just one top-five finish in five events since.

Talor Gooch (+1400) may be worth fading this week. He came in 35th here last year, and while his three wins this year are the most of any golfer on the LIV circuit, he’s struggled when he hasn’t claimed victory. Gooch’s three wins are his only top-10 finishes on the season. All three of his wins have also come outside the United States, but that may be a coincidence more than anything.

Brooks Kopeka (+1600) has faded a bit after his hot start that included a LIV win in Orlando, a runner-up at the Masters, and a victory at the PGA Championship. Since the PGA win, Koepka has just one top-five finish in five starts. However, Kopeka has spent the last several weeks getting into prime form for next week’s Ryder Cup. As the only LIV member taking part in the competition between the United States and Europe, expect Koepka to want to gain plenty of momentum before he heads to Italy to represent both his country and his golf home.

Joaquin Niemann’s (+1800) first full season with LIV Golf has been somewhat disappointing, as the Chilean star sits 21st in the standings with no top-five finishes. Last year, however, Niemann scored a fourth-place finish here in Chicago, and he’s coming off a season-best seventh-place effort at Bedminster in the most recent LIV tournament.

Longshots

Only a slight underdog at +2500, Dean Burmester has five top-10 finishes this season and is on a streak of two in a row following a fifth at Bedminster. His South African Stinger GC team has also been on fire as of late, picking up five top-three team finishes (including a win in Tulsa) in their last six starts.

Anirban Lahiri (+3250) has two runner-up finishes this season, with the most recent one coming the last time out at Bedminster. The native of India doesn’t have another top-10 finish outside of those two second-place efforts, but at longer odds, he’s worth a look if he can maintain his form from New Jersey.

2023 LIV Golf Chicago Odds

Even at short odds, it’s impossible not to back Smith this week. We also like Reed’s chances to finally breakthrough for a LIV victory, along with Koepka, Niemann, and Lahiri.
