Sanderson Farms Championship Odds, Field & Betting Picks

One week after the Ryder Cup, one golfer from that event in Italy is making the trip back to the United States to take part in the Sanderson Farms Championship, the second event of the new PGA Tour Fall schedule. Here the 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship Odds, Field & Betting Picks.

PGA Tour Odds

You may be surprised to read that it’s Ludvig Aberg, the youngster from Sweden who helped lead the European team to victory over Team USA last week.

Aberg, the 23-year-old who turned pro in June is looking to add to his list of recent accomplishments, which include a DP World Tour win and the largest margin of victory in this history of Ryder Cup matches. Aberg and FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland handed a 9-and-7 beatdown to Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka as part of Europe’s win in the competition. Now, Aberg is looking for regular entry into PGA Tour events in 2024.

This tournament began in 1968 (as the Magnolia Classic) and was an official money event on the PGA Tour since 1994. It was played against big events for much of that time until 2019, when the event was moved to the second tournament of the new season and is a stand-alone event that gives full benefits to the winner. The purse of $8.2 million is a record—up slightly from $97 million in 2022.

The Course

The Country Club of Jackson opened in 1914 and has played host of the Sanderson Farms Championship since 2014. The 18-hole course that the pros use was redesigned in 2008 and is a par-72 track that measures 7,460 yards. There are plenty of challenges here, including four par-5 holes that rank among the toughest on the PGA Tour and tricky greens that are a bit on the smaller side compared to other courses. The final hole is also a challenging 505-yard par 4 that doesn’t give a golfer trying to win the tournament any favors.

Sam Burns’ 22-under 266 in 2021 was the best score shot on this course. The tournament record was set by Scott Stallings’ -24 in 2012 in Madison, Mississippi. The aggregate scoring record is Dan Halldorson’s 263, which was set in 1986 at Hattiesburg Country Club.

Fresh Off Ryder Cup Win, Can Ludvig Aberg Continue Hot Streak at PGA Tour’s Sanderson Farms Championship?

Ludvig Aberg (+1000) proved last week that the big stage wasn’t intimidating to him, so it shouldn’t be a concern that he’s a favorite in a PGA Tour event. Aberg played nine PGA Tour events in 2023, coming in fourth at the John Deere Classic and notching three other top-25 finishes. In Europe, he’s logged three straight top-10s, including a win at the Omega European Masters, which many believe cemented his inclusion on the European Ryder Cup team.

Aberg is playing for quite a bit this fall. He’s currently No. 80 in the Official World Golf Rankings and No. 136 in the FedEx Cup standings. If he can get into the top 125 in the FedEx Cup, he would earn a spot at The Players Championship and other events. If he reaches No. 50 in the OWGR, he’ll earn a Masters invitation, and winning one of these events would get him all of those privileges along with entry into other Signature Events in 2024.

Other Contenders

While the results won’t blow you away, the consistency of Stephan Jaeger (+1200) is worth marveling at. Despite logging two top 10s over the past year, Jaeger makes a habit of playing on the weekend. He’s made the cut in 14 straight events. Among those, half resulted in finishes inside the top 25. He’s also four out of five here in Jackson.

Eric Cole (+1200) had a break-out rookie season by making the FedEx Cup playoffs and finishing inside the top 50, meaning that he gained entry into all of 2024’s big events. Now, the late bloomer (35 years old) is looking past 2024 since a win would give him an exemption for multiple years. After missing five out of 11 cuts early in the year, he broke through with a playoff appearance at The Honda Classic. He logged two other top-six finishes prior to the end of the 2022-23 season and started the fall series on a high note with a fourth at the Fortinet Championship three weeks ago.

Emiliano Grillo (+1800) picked up a win earlier this year and reached the Tour Championship, but he’s playing in this event since her performs so well here. His scoring average over 16 rounds here is nearly three full shots under par, and he’s coming off a fifth-place finish in 2022.

S.H. Kim (+2750) nearly pulled one out at the Fortinet Championship, but fellow youngster Sahith Theegala ended up pulling away for his first win of his career. Kim, coming off a runner-up finish, heads to Jackson with plenty of confidence, having carded a 13th-place finish on the heels of strong putting.

Longshots

Beau Hossler (+3500) has a top-10 finish to his credit in this event and comes in after his strongest season to date. While he didn’t make the top 50 in the standings, he currently is 58th, so there’s plenty for him to play for—including a first-career win. He’s finished in the top 30 in five of his last six starts coming into this weekend.

Tom Hoge (+4000) finished in the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings, but it was a long spring and summer for the Texan. He was sitting in 16th in the standings after a third-place effort at The Players Championship in March, but that marked his last top-10 finish. As a result, he dropped to 46th in the standings. He’s hoping a little rest, coupled with a 14th-place result at the BMW PGA Championship in England last month, will help turn his fortunes around. This is his ninth time playing in this event.

2023 Sanderson Farms Championship Odds

Aberg continues to impress, so we’re not going to shy away from him here despite being favored. We’re also backing Cole and Grillo in the mid-range, along with longer shots Kim and Hoge.
