A week after The Open Championship in England, the 50-and-over crowd head to Royal Porthcawl in Wales for the Senior Open Championship. Check the 2023 Senior Open Championship Odds and our free golf picks!
The big story will be that someone else will be able to win this tournament with Steve Stricker not in the field. Stricker has won three of the four senior majors this year but is not making the trip overseas for this one.
The R&A, which runs the event commonly known as the British Open, also holds the senior edition. Like the men’s major, the event is held at a different course in the United Kingdom and has since the tournament’s inception in 1987.
Much like they dominated The Open Championship, Bernhard Langer (four wins), Tom Watson, and Gary Player (three each) are the most decorated golfers at this event. Darren Clarke is the defending champion.
Royal Porthcawl has been voted the best golf course in Wales by a number of publications. The traditional links course will provide the challenges that they are known for—tall rough, big greens, and those pot bunkers. The course has never held an Open Championship, but it does host qualifiers for that major. This will be the third time it hosts the Senior British Open.
Padraig Harrington (+350) is the heavy favorite with Stricker not in the field. The two-time Open Championship winner was runner-up to Stricker in the Senior PGA Championship and was fifth at the Regions Tradition. He also won the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open a month ago on the senior tour. Harrington will look to be the fifth golfer to win both the Open Championship and the senior version.
Steven Alker (+750), the 2022 Charles Schwab Cup champion on the PGA Tour Champions, is proving that his breakout campaign a year ago was no fluke. Alker has one win in 2023, two runners-up, and a total of seven top-10 finishes in 10 starts.
Bernhard Langer (+1200) won the previous two editions of this event at Royal Porthcawl, and he also set the senior tour wins record with a victory in the 2023 U.S. Senior Open last month. With a major win this year, two on this course, and two other Senior British Open championships, he should be a factor here.
Miguel Angel Jimenez (+1300) won this event in 2018 and finished runner-up in 2021. The Spaniard owns two fifth-place finishes in earlier senior majors this year and also placed runner-up among his 10 top 10s in 14 starts in 2023.
Americans have done well here, but we favor Harrington, Langer, and Jimenez this weekend. Other European golfers who have good value are Retief Goosen (+2300) and defending champ Darren Clarke (+2900).
