Fowler creates history and hangs onto lead during gripping second round

This year’s US Open has been different. The first time the event has been held in LA since 1948, this normally hard scoring tournament is proving anything but as leader Rickie Fowler has picked up ten strokes through his first 36 holes.

Fowler and Xander Schauffele set the tone for the week as they made the most of generous course conditions in the first round, reaching a total of -8 and setting a new record for the lowest round in US Open history.

Despite the pressures of leading, Fowler was able to make just enough putts in his second round to reach -10 and lead the tournament by one shot.

Fowler’s fellow history maker Xander Schauffele was unable to capitalize on his fast start and could only post a level par 70 in his second round with his four birdies being cancelled out by four bogeys.

Playing alongside Schauffele today will be Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman so often struggles during the early rounds of majors but finds himself bang in contention following two great rounds of 65 and 67. Without a major win since 2014, he will be desperate to finally land a fifth career major this weekend.

Despite lacking the star power of other names around him, Wyndham Clark is playing the best golf of his career. A winner of the 2023 Wells Fargo, this will be Clark’s biggest test and it will be fascinating to see how he handles the occasion.

On a course that has shown plenty of bite, Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith, Harris English and Scottie Scheffler will all believe that this could be their year despite having some ground to make up.

2023 US Open Golf Championship Round 3 Betting Preview

Despite starting today two strokes behind it is Rory McIlroy who is the favorite in the betting. McIlroy has had several near misses since last winning a major back in 2014 but is usually having to charge up the leaderboard on the final day. Due to his strong start McIlroy can play some sensible golf and hope to cement his position near the top of the leaderboard.

Current leader Rickie Fowler comes next in the betting as he continues his bid to win his first major. 2023 has been a fantastic year for Fowler who has bounced back from several years in the golfing wilderness.

Fowler headed into this week with two successive top ten finishes and is clearly hitting the ball well. Fowler has been in this position before and will hope to use his experience today.

Xander Schauffele is another man looking to win his first major and the Californian has put himself in a strong position to do so. A first round -8 was Schauffele’s best round of the year and he would have been disappointed not to have kicked on during yesterday’s second round. Capable of blitzing any course, Schauffele will hope to come out fully firing today.

For a multiple major winner, Dustin Johnson wasn’t considered a major challenger heading into this tournament. However, Johnson has shown he is certainly not a force of the past and will start today just four shots off the lead. A devastatingly big hitter, Johnson knows what is needed to win the world’s biggest tournaments and could be a terrific value play today.
