After an eventful day of golf where some players had to play 27 holes due to the fog that delayed the start of the tournament, second-round leader Patrick Rodgers maintained his lead heading into today’s Valero Texas Open Round 4.
The American started the third round with a three-stroke lead but will start today’s final round with just a slender one-stroke advantage.
Rodgers has never won on the PGA Tour and a win today will not only end that winless streak but also secure him a place in next week’s Masters field.
With hopes of cementing his lead even further, it would end up being a frustrating day for tournament leader Patrick Rodgers. Unable to get the crucial birdie putts to drop, Rodgers could only fire a 71 and will have to handle a whole host of contenders who has all closed to within a few strokes of his lead.
In today’s final pairing with Rodgers will be Canadien Corey Connors. Connors is looking for his first PGA success since landing this title four years ago.
Starting the day three behind Rodgers, Connors was able to move to within one of the lead thanks to a superb back nine where he posted five birdies. Already assured of his Masters place, Connors has the freedom to attack the course today and will be a danger to all in the field.
Matt Kuchar will start the tournament alone in third place three strokes off the lead. Kuchar would have been a lot closer having it not been for a disastrous final hole where the Georgian native would go onto score a costly double bogey. Still, just three back, the nine-time PGA Tour winner will be confident of making a final round charge.
Ten players will start today’s final round within five strokes of the lead and this is tournament still looks like it could have plenty of twists and turns to come.
With his one-stroke lead, Patrick Rodgers is still the slim favorite for victory. Today will mark the fourth time that Rodgers will head into a final round in the final pairing and as of yet he has failed to turn any of those favorable positions into a victory. With the pressure on the thirty-year-old bound to be immense it will be fascinating to see how he handles the occasion.
The winner back in 2019, Connors has become a regular towards the top of leaderboards. It is often in the final round that he can become unstuck, however, if he hits the ball like he did yesterday he could be the man they all have to catch.
Matt Kuchar rounds out the top three in the betting and will be hopeful of lifting a tenth PGA Tour title. Kuchar has built on his promising showing at last week’s WGC World Matchplay and will be hoping his experience could play a pivotal role in proceedings today.
Chris Kirk will start today four strokes behind Rodgers and will be looking for his second success of 2023. The winner of this year’s Honda Classic, Kirk finds himself at 34 in the world and has been playing some solid and consistent golf. Another already assured of his Masters place, he could be the best value bet of the day.
