After the drama of last week’s Masters, the PGA Tour has moved to South Carolina for this year’s RBC Heritage. Here are the RBC Heritage Round 1 and 2 Highlights & Round 3 Preview.
An elevated PGA Tour event, a loaded field has gathered at the beautiful Harbour Town Golf Links with the players all hoping to get their hands on a share of the huge $20,000,000 prize pool.
After two rounds few would have predicted that it would be 2016 PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker that would be sitting atop the leaderboard.
Leading the tournament by three strokes, Walker has shot two consecutive rounds of 65 and looks to be showing signs of the form that has taken him to six PGA Tour titles.
Since his major breakthrough, Walker has been beset by injuries and ill health. Now ranked at 417 in the world, Walker is looking for his first win in seven years. It’s been two years since he finished in the top ten of any PGA tournament. With some of the game’s biggest names gathering behind him, Walker is going to have to play some of his very best golf if he is to pull off the shock win.
Three players will start today’s third round at -9, three strokes behind Walker’s lead. Justin Rose, Xander Schaufelle, and Scottie Scheffler will all be wanting to cement their positions at the top of the leaderboard.
Starting today within six shots of the lead are the likes of Viktor Hovland, Patrick Cantlay, Rickie Fowler, Cameron Young, Justin Spieth, and last week’s Masters Champion Jon Rahm.
Heading into the week many were wondering how Rahm would be able to handle this tournament following the monumental physical and mental effort it took to land golf’s biggest prize.
RBC Heritage Round 1 suggested that Rahm might still have been feeling the effects of his Augusta triumph as he could only start with a disappointing +1, 72. But in yesterday’s second round Rahm showed exactly why he has just been crowned the Masters champion with a superb -7, 64 in his second round.
Starting the day six behind, he is still a huge danger to everybody in the field and it wouldn’t be a shock to see his name up with the leaders after today’s round.
33 players will tee off today within seven shots of Jimmy Walker’s lead and this is a tournament that is still wide open.
Despite sitting three shots behind, the current favorite for victory is Scottie Scheffler. Already twice a winner on Tour this year, Scheffler played great at last week’s Masters but couldn’t get the putts to drop.
With the putter getting hotter, Scheffler looks back to the complete player we have become so accustomed to seeing. A birdie machine, Scheffler has the game to overturn the deficit he currently faces with ease and will be looking to get back inside the winner’s circle once more.
Patrick Cantlay will start today one stroke behind Scheffler and four off the lead on -8. Another player who played well at last week’s Masters, Cantlay came under immense criticism for his slow play in the find round.
Clearly, not one to be flustered, Cantlay has put the noise behind him and has produced two solid rounds. Looking for his first win since last week’s BMW, Cantlay will be hoping he will be able to go one better than his second-place finish in this tournament last year.
Xander Schaufelle rounds out the top three in the betting. It’s been a frustrating season for the American who has failed to fire in 2023. There have been signs that Schaufelle is starting to play better and his tenth-placed finish at last week’s Masters showed that his game is starting to trend in the right direction.
Jon Rahm finds himself a little way down the betting and currently can be backed at +1600. A huge price for a player of his class, Rahm lit up this iconic venue yesterday with one of the best rounds of the day. Clearly, in great form, he has to be the value bet of the day.
