It was an exciting weekend of golf events around the world. Let us dive into the 2023 WGC Match Play Highlights. Also, let’s take a look at the picks for the Valero Texas Open and the LIV Golf Orlando.
In the last edition of the WGC Match play taking place at Austin Country Club, Sam Burns defeated world number one Scottie Scheffler on the 21st hole and then went on to crush Cameron Young to win his 5th PGA event. Young made it to the final after a late collapse by Rory McIlroy allowed the match to go to extra holes and Young went on to win the semi-final match. In the 3rd place match, Scheffler defeated McIlroy. With the victory Burns is now number 9 in the world, and Scottie Scheffler remains number 1.
Few tournaments can boast the history of the Valero Texas Open which was first played in 1922 and this will be the 90th edition.
Only two of the top 30 will tee off in Texas and one of those is Hideki Matsuyama who withdrew from the Match Play with an injury. The good news is that this event is the last chance to qualify for the Masters which means while the field is light on quality there are many veterans looking to grab the trophy.
This list starts with Tyrrell Hatton who is ranked 17th in the world and sits at 10/1. Next on the list is 2019 champion Corey Conners at 15/1. Ricky Fowler and Si Woo Kim are 18/1 and rounding out the top 5 is Taylor Mongomery at 20/1. Defending Champion JJ Spaun is 30/1.
Our pick this week is Matt Kuchar at 25/1. Kuchar finished second last year and is in good form. Here is a look at the top 10 according to our sponsor JazzSports.
The LIV Tour heads to Orlando for the third event of the year. Cameron Smith and Dustin Johnson are co-favorites at 10/1. Joaquin Niemann is at 11/1 with Mito Pereira and Paul Casey at 15/1. The tournament will be played on the Crooked Cat Course at Orange County National Golf Center and will be shown on the CW network.
