Lucas Glover Wins Playoff in FedEx St. Jude Championship

Just over a week ago, the odds were against Lucas Glover making the PGA Tour’s playoffs. Now, he’s one of the favorites to win the FedEx Cup.

Glover snapped a two-year win drought with a victory at the Wyndham Championship last week just to get into the playoffs. Then in the first of three playoff events, the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee, Glover outlasted a hard-charging Patrick Cantlay in a playoff to win back-to-back events.

“You work hard no matter what because you never know when it can turn,” Glover said about his struggles before his hot streak over the past month. “It’s turned very quickly for me, and luckily, I’ve been in a good frame of mind to take advantage of it.”

Glover led a tight field into Sunday’s final round, and the 43-year-old shot a 1-under 69 to finish at a 15-under 265. Cantlay, who won three out of the last five playoff events dating back to 2021, moved up four spots with a 6-under 64 to also finish at -15.

The 2021 FedEx Cup champion took the lead briefly, but Glover parred the 17th hole to pull even. He just missed a long birdie putt on 18 that would’ve given him the championship.

“I had to keep fighting. Closing holes here aren’t easy birdies, and they’re not easy pars really. I was fortunate to get into the playoff, and I was just the last man standing this week,” Glover said.

In the playoff, the two played hole 18 again. Cantlay’s tee shot trickled into the water while Glover was safely in the fairway on the par-4. After a drop, Cantlay put his ball just inside of Glover’s on the green, but he was there in three shots, while Glover reached in two.

Lucas Glover missed the birdie putt but tapped in for par. Cantlay needed to sink the long birdie putt, and he nearly did. His putt went just along the right edge of the cup and went past the hole.

It was Glover’s sixth win and biggest since the 2009 U.S. Open. It also marks the first time Glover won two times in the same season. He’s also the first player over the age of 40 to win back-to-back tournaments since Vijay Singh did it in 2008.

Glover is now up to third in the FedEx Cup standings, behind Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler

As for the rest of the field, Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood tied for third at -14. Taylor Moore, who started the day in second one shot behind Glover, would up fifth after shooting a 1-over 71.

There was a huge logjam at -11 for sixth place. Seven players tied for that spot, including Jordan Spieth—who was the first-round leader. The others were Corey Conners, Adam Schenk, Cam Davis, Sungjae Im, Russell Henley, and Max Homa
