After two rounds of this year’s PGA Championship Corey Connors, Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler are tied for the lead on -5. In what is a stacked leaderboard, Bryson DeChambeau sits two strokes adrift on -3 with fellow LIV Golf Tour member Brooks Koepka a further shot back on -2. Here the PGA Championship Round 2 Highlights
Played at Oak Hill, the set up for the course this week has been monstrously tough with only nine players currently sitting under par. With conditions set to be even tougher over the weekend, there are sure to be plenty more twists and turns to come.
With the start of this year’s PGA being delayed to poor weather, the first round was completed over two days. Coming into the tournament with odds of +5000, it was Bryson DeChambeau who surprisingly led the field after round one.
Having largely struggled since his move to the LIV Tour, DeChambeau showed exactly why he has is a former major winner and has won multiple PGA Tour titles. His first round 66 consisted of some huge ball striking and some wonderfully deft play around the greens.
Playing in the worst of the second-round conditions, DeChambeau battled hard to post a more than respectable 71 and will head into today’s third round just two off the lead.
With DeChambeau dropping back into the pack, Viktor Hovland, Corey Connors, and world number two Scottie Scheffler managed to play their way to the top of the leaderboard.
For most of the second round it was Connors who held the lead, but he would be joined by the Norwegian and American.
Heading up the last hole of his second round Scheffler held the outright lead, but a disappointing bogey would see him drop a shot and finish the day tied at the top on -5.
Scheffler has had a great year so far with victories at the Phoenix Open and Players Championship. With one major already to his name, he looks ideally placed to double his tally by the end of the weekend and return to the top of the golf rankings.
Scottie Scheffler is currently in a three-way tie for the lead but is the heavy outright favorite to win this year’s PGA Championship.
The Texan found himself in a similar position at last week’s AT&T Championship and would have been disappointed not to have converted his halfway lead.
Hitting the ball beautifully with his irons, Scheffler has been peppering the flags with astonishing regularity. If he can keep his ball on the fairways, he should be able to give himself plenty of looks for birdie today.
Tucked in behind Scheffler in the betting is third round playing partner Viktor Hovland. No stranger to success on the PGA Tour, Hovland has found himself vying for the lead at last year’s Open as well as this year’s Masters. A devasting hitter of the ball, it’s on the greens where Hovland has often fallen short. If he can keep the putter hot, he should still find himself in the mix heading into tomorrow’s final round.
Corey Connors has already won on the PGA Tour this season, winning the Valero Texas Open for the second time in his career. This week, the Canadian has produced two solid rounds and is hitting the ball as well as anyone in the field. Whilst he doesn’t have the pedigree of his co-leaders, it would be wrong to dismiss his chances.
Brooks Koepka is twice a winner of this tournament and looks ideally placed to make a third-round charge. After a couple of years battling injuries, Koepka looks ready to compete for the game’s biggest titles once again. A superb back nine yesterday put him right in the mix and he will expect to end today near the top of the leaderboard.
The value bet of today’s third round could be Rory McIlroy. By his own admission, he has been woeful of the tee but still finds himself only five shots back. With the rest of his game in good working order, Rory McIlroy will feel that he can make a surge. Odds of +2000 could end up looking overpriced if he can reduce those troublesome errors off the tee.
